Unidentified gunmen burned down last Friday a heavy equipment
owned by a private contractor undertaking government’s road and bridge projects
in Maitum, Sarangani.
Fernando Santander, district engineer of Department of Public
Works and Highways for Sarangani, said the suspects set on fire a brand new
bulldozer owned by Jargon Construction which is undertaking the P60 million
road and bridge projects in a remote village of barangay Luyong in Maitum,
Sarangani around 5:30 p.m.
The flagship projects will connect Maitum and barangay Ned of Lake
Sebu in South Cotabato, where mining activities are reportedly undergoing.
Santander said luckily DPWH project engineers who conducted
an inspection of the projects that day had already left the area when the
suspects arrived at the project site.
The area is said to be a stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation
Front.
“Our office may suspend the implementation of the projects should
there be an imminent threat on the lives of the people involved in the
construction works,” Santander.
He said he is still awaiting the report and recommendation of
local military commanders assigned in the area.
