NPA cadre surrenders to military

A combat trainer of the New People's Army (NPA) rebel group operating in the South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City (Socsksargen) area surrendered to the authorities last Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Alejandro Nacnac, commanding-officer of the 27th Infantry Battalion (IB), identified the rebel surrenderee as Joshua Flacay Dason, 33, and known in the NPA circle as "Ebven."

Dason is alleged to be the team leader of the "Primero Platoon Makar" of the NPA's Far South Mindanao Region (FMSR) operating in the boundary of Tulunan, North Cotabato and Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.

Dason reportedly surrendered to the 27th IB soldiers in the remote part of Columbio town in Sultan Kudarat.

Nacnac said Dason decided to surrender because of the "hard life" and "hunger" he had experienced in the mountain.

"Pagod na daw siya sa katatakbo at katatago everytime may ma-encounter sila na government troops. Hindi na rin daw niya kaya ang hirap ng buhay at tiisin ang gutom sa bundok," Nacnac said.

Nacnac said Dason plays an important role in NPA operations in Socsksargen area because his job is to train the NPA recruits on combat and guerilla warfare training.

"Sa pagsuko ni Dason, parang napilayan ang NPA dahil sa kanyang kaalaman sa guerilla warfare," Nacnac said.

Nacnac urged other NPA members to follow Dason's decision to leave the communist group, saying "masarap mamuhay ng tahimik na kasama ang pamilya." (RAMIL BAJO)
