Sarangani fisherfolks get GPS fish finder devices from provincial government

KIAMBA, Sarangani- The provincialgovernment has distributed Global Positioning System with fish finder devices and life vest  worth P265 thousand to local fisherfolks from the two villages of this municipality.

Provincial Agriculturist Jonathan Duhaylungsod, together with Municipal Agriculturist Angeline Gulmatico, turned over a total of 15 units of GPS equipment and 20 pieces of life vest jacket to the members of Purok Mabuhay Fisherfolk Association of Barangay Datu Dani and Talima Salakit Fisherfolk Association of Barangay Salakit.

Duhaylungsod said, while the life vest jackets will serve as protection during rough sea conditions, the newly-acquired fish finder which uses highly-sensitive and advanced GPS system will help the fisherfolks in mapping their waypoints, making fishing operations more cost-effective and efficient.

The provision of these devices, according to Duhaylungsod, is a component of provincial agriculture office’s HARM FREE or Hazards Adaptation, Reduction and Mitigation for FaRmErs and FishErfolk Project 2021.

HARM FREE is among various projects in the provincial government  funded through its 5% Calamity Fund.

Duhaylungsod said the fisherfolk associations in Kiamba were the first recipients for this year but he explained the project targets to cover all the six coastal municipalities of the province.

“For how many years na nato sila ginatagaan. And, I think sa among experience, daghan g’yud sila nasulti nga nindot. Maong gipadayon nato ang project,” Duhaylungsod said.

Guibon also said the devices will help reduce their expenses during their fishing operations when it comes to fuel consumption “kay dili na mi masaag maskin asa.”

Duhaylungsod hoped the fisherfolk could feel the support of the provincial officials “especially Governor Solon who is very supportive g’yud sa atong mga project para sa mga fishermen.” (Jori Mae R. Samillano/SARANGANI PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)
