NPA rebels burn heavy equipment owned by private firm

Suspected New People's Army rebels burned a heavy equipment owned by a private contractor in T'boli, South Cotabato Tuesday night.

Capt. Rey Balibagoso, 1002nd Army Brigade civil military operations officer, said unidentified armed men believed to be NPA rebels set on fire the bulldozer owned by Jargon Construction Co. while it was parked near the Sumifro packing plant in sitio Spring, Barangay Poblacion in T'boli town.

Witnesses said they saw at least two unidentified suspects armed with rifles hurriedly left the area after they burned down the bulldozer.

Balibagoso said the construction firm which had undertaken the road project in the area, has been receiving extortion letters from the NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

NPA rebels had also burned last year the heavy equipment owned by the Jargon construction firm while undertaking government infrastructure projects in Malapatan, Sarangani and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

T'boli Mayor Dibu Tuan ordered the deployment of additional policemen to secure government projects around the town.

Colonel Ronald Villanueva, 1002nd Army Brigade commander, said the NPA rebels resorted to criminal activities to raise funds and derail the economic development in the far-flung communities.
