MGB strengthens mining sector stakeholders in Region 12

GENERAL SANTOS CITY- The Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Socsksargen Region has strengthened the association of various stakeholders in mining industry in the region in a bid to push the advocacy of responsible mining.

Engr. Efren Garrido, DENR-MGB regional director, said the Socsksargen Responsible Miners Association (SRMA)has been reactivated to intensify the information campaign on responsible mining.

He said the association is composed of representatives from large -scale mining companies operating in Socsksargen region  composed of the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, North Cotabato and the cities of General Santos and Cotabato.

The association had elected its new set of officers President- Geronimo Sequito of Tribal Mining Corporation; Vice-President Joseph Palanca of Saggitarius Mines Inc; Secretary -Joel Bernales of Kiamba Mining Corp. and Treasurer- Gilvert Mondido of GRCO Mining Corp.

Garrido said SRMA officials will be coordinating with MGB officials and other stakeholders in pushing for the advocacy on responsible mining around the region.

He said the strengthening of the mining stakeholders in the region was in pursuance to the directive of Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu to intensify the information campaign on responsible mining amid the adverse reports on the environmental destruction brought about by erring mining firms which were ordered closed by former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez.
